Nineteen John F. Kennedy Middle School students spent quality time with Eichelberger Elementary School students this week. As part of a new initiative, the middle schoolers spent their lunch period eating with kindergarten and first grade students. They also helped at recess and played games. The day was so successful, the peer buddies program will become a weekly occurrence between the two schools.

John F. Kennedy Middle School seventh and eighth graders in Maestra Hiliana DeLaPaz’s Spanish class recently learned about the 3,000-year-old tradition of the celebration of Dia De Los Muertos. The students created mini altar boxes with ofrendas to honor and celebrate the lives of loved ones or historical figures who have passed away. They also learned about the correlation between the Monarch butterflies' migration and the Dia De Los Muertos. They learned to make their own papel picado and paper flowers de cempasuchil (marigolds). John F. Kennedy Middle School eighth grader, Ayden Guido, won first place for best altar box voted by the entire school. Not picture: Eighth grade students, Manasa Prasanna and Luke Iskander also tied for second place.

Fifty District 202 students in the Functionally Based Instruction (FBI) program got in the holiday spirit on Wednesday, December 11 at Ira Jones Middle School. Middle school students in the program from John F. Kennedy, Heritage Grove and Ira Jones attended the festivities. Students enjoyed cookie decorating, craft making and games/sing-along activities. In all, about 80 students, teachers, paraprofessionals and parents were present. Everyone came together for lunch and then enjoyed a dance party, which included a special visit from Mr. and Mrs. Claus, facilitated by Ira Jones 8th graders. Peer buddies from Ira Jones, along with several parents, helped during the festivities. “Many of the students involved are participants in the Extended School Year (ESY) program and Special Olympics, making this gathering an excellent opportunity for them to connect and enjoy each other’s company,” Ira Jones FBI teacher Melissa Griffith said.
